The reality of VHS tapes is they won't last forever. A VHS tape uses fragile magnetic tape that degrades over time (even when stored). The other problem is your VHS player could eventually jam and break the tape, possibly erasing your family memories.

Converting to DVD will also save you a lot of physical space and can be easily duplicated saving those memories.
